Winnie the Pooh pub up for sale

A grade II-listed pub in the East Sussex village of Hartfield, famous as the setting of EE Milne’s Winnie the Pooh books, is up for sale for £795,000.

The Anchor Inn, a freehouse, is a two-storey pub with two bars, a 40-cover dining area, four bedroom owners’ accommodation, two ensuite bed and breakfast rooms, a large garden with an area for hosting marquee wedding receptions and car parking for 50 vehicles.

Hartfield, on the edge of Ashdown Forest, is also home to Pooh landmarks Pooh Corner and Pooh Sticks Bridge and is a tourist destination in its own right.

The Anchor Inn enjoys a “good reputation” with the local community and recently won OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice 2016 award, Christie & Co, which is managing the sale, said.

The firm’s James Hughes said: “The Anchor Inn has been in the same ownership for the past 30 years and the owners now wish to focus on other business interests.

“This sale offers a fantastic opportunity for a new operator to take the reins and grow the business further, capitalising on the large amount of tourists in the area.”

Mr Hughes said there has been a “surge” in demand for properties across East Sussex since the start of the year.
