Award-winning pub seeks new owner

An award-winning pub located in Portslade, Brighton is newly on the market.

The Stanley Arms – a real ale pub - on Wolseley Road is for sale for £425,000. The freehouse has won numerous Camra awards, notably for Pub of the Year.

Steve and Barbara Bennett are leaving the business after 12 years at the Portslade pub, Brighton & Hove News reported.

Mr Bennett said: “Having spent 12 years at the Stanley, and in the process, winning the Brighton and South Downs Camra Pub of the Year eight times, we are now looking to semi-retire and concentrate on our other smaller businesses.

“Myself and my wife are both in our sixties and feel we need to slow down before the grim reaper calls early.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for a new operator to build on our success and take the Stanley to the next level.”

Having taken over the freehold in September 2002, the Bennetts increased the number of handpumps to seven, being able to offer a wider selection of real ales.

Kate Dowd, of chartered surveyors Fleurets who are marketing the property for the Bennetts, said: “This is an award-winning established and respected real ale house.

“However, there is scope for any new operator to develop the business and increase the trade by increasing the current opening hours and providing a basic food offer.”
