carnoisseur was founded in 1979. the company began as a mail order business supported by a quality catalogue which, we can justifiably claim, is still the foremost publication of its kind in the united kingdom.
we soon recognised that only a small percentage of people were happy to buy via mail order, as many customers, especially in this market, like to receive face-to-face advice about the products they wish to buy. so, building on our mail order success, the first carnoisseur retail outlet was opened in northampton in 1986. with the potential of carnoisseur shops obvious from the start we decided to concentrate our efforts on expanding into retailing via a network of franchised outlets.
demonstrating our commitment to ethical franchising, we invested a great deal of time and money in a pilot franchise scheme extending over three years. during this period our operational and financial systems were tested, fine tuned and proven in every respect. such rigorous testing ensured that our systems now operate successfully throughout our chain of retail outlets.
our northampton premises proved unsuitable for supporting our expanding organisation, so we made the decision to relocate to our present site in dunstable as it offered better retail and office facilities. as our network has grown these facilities have been improved and enlarged to match our requirements.
the mail order business (accompanied by an online operation) is still going strong but it now represents less than 3% of our total turnover, with the balance, over going through our growing chain of
